How Restaurant Catering is Changing the Balance Sheet of America – RLC Presentation 2013

As many of you know, I’m passionate about catering in multi-unit restaurant ecosystems.  As part of my duties at MonkeyMedia Software, I recently had a wonderful opportunity to speak at the Restaurant Leadership Conference in Scottsdale last month.  My team captured the whole presentation on video, and I thought I’d post it here for anyone who is interested in seeing it.

Superteam Family!

Well, I’m back in Vancouver now.  Thinking about the week in front of me at MonkeyMedia Software.  Before I do that, I just want to take a minute to close the loop on my ‘in and out’ trip to the Midwest Last Week.

If you read my previous post, you will have learned that I was entering an ‘uncertain change process‘ for a 170 unit pizza chain that is family owned.  Been in business for 50 years.  5th generation.  Lot’s of history and water under the bridge.

I was anticipating a bit of an uphill battle towards strategic alignment on their catering program.  Just because of the family and team dynamics.  But I have to say, this was a super experience!


Well, to my good fortune, not only were they kind to me, they were incredibly creative, open minded and passionate.  Their willingness to succeed is obvious and to be honest, they just simply made my job easier.  Trust was high during our session and as I so often do, I just tried to listen and learn.  They have ALL the answers already.

I was so happy to see the commitment in the room.  Job well done!  I left on Friday feeling quite accomplished.  I love working with Family Businesses!

Why servant leadership is crucial for a successful restaurant catering program

I know, I know, I go on a lot about leadership.  You are probably tired of hearing me already!  The thing is, as I continue this incredible journey as the founder and CEO of MonkeyMedia Software, I am just so lucky to meet so many amazing leaders. Great leaders, with great ideas, teams and execution. So, this got me thinking about my own leadership abilities. After all, my job is to serve my team at MonkeyMedia Software.

 I work with a lot of restaurant brands at the C-level to help them get more comfortable with their off-premise service strategy. In every successful case, there is always someone driving the catering operation that lives and breathes catering all day long. 24/7/365

While this catering leadership is crucial to the success of your catering program, it’s even more crucial that the C-level brand leaders serve these new “catering stakeholders.”

Without the support structure in place at the highest level of your organization, mid-level managers and front-line employees at the store-level will have a hard time carrying out the mission of your catering strategy. They just won’t be able to succeed and deliver results.

Top line leaders must not only be supportive, they must live to serve their team members and set them up for success in catering, just like any other business channel.  Never lose sight of the big picture, and make sure that you wake up every day to serve your off-premise stakeholders if you want to realize positive results in your catering business.
